Warehouse Reporting
Part of Fulfilment performance reporting
Building a warehouse exception dashboard
Turn warehouse exceptions into an owned queue with source records, deadlines, next actions and closure checks.
Build a warehouse exception dashboard as a queue of unresolved cases. Each row should show the last confirmed event, owner and next action, plus a route to the source order or work record.
Summary counts can reveal a build-up. Staff still need the underlying case to resolve it.
Select cases that need intervention
Start with work the warehouse must act on. This includes a short pick, a stock mismatch holding work, a pack correction awaiting approval, a labelled parcel still on site after its handover deadline, or a handover record that cannot be matched to a parcel. Assign failed order imports to the integration owner rather than a picker.
Define how each case opens and closes. A short pick is not resolved merely because a worker moved to another task; the affected quantity still needs a decision. A labelled parcel is not late until its handover deadline has passed. Use the operation's actual events and commitments.
Microsoft's documented short-pick workflow records picked quantity and reason and creates a location work exception. Its Outbound work monitoring workspace can show a tile for locations with open work exceptions. The workspace is one possible source for a dashboard, not proof that every exception category is captured automatically or that this case queue exists in Dynamics 365.
Give each row enough context
Field / Use
- Case ID and category
- Distinguish cases from repeat alerts
- Order, work and parcel IDs
- Open the source records
- Last confirmed event and time
- Find where progress stopped
- Affected item, quantity or parcel
- Identify the obligation at risk
- Due time and age
- Support priority without hiding older cases
- Owner, next action and review time
- Make follow-up accountable
- Source and last data update
- Show whether the alert may be stale
Link a repeat alert to its existing unresolved case. Retain the original event and later corrections. Where the outcome is uncertain, show that uncertainty before anyone issues another pick or label request.
Sort for action
Show open cases by urgency, with the dispatch or operational deadline beside their age. Filter by warehouse, zone, category and owner, and make unassigned cases visible. Keep closed-case trends in a separate view so they do not crowd the live queue.
A high count in one zone prompts inspection, not a diagnosis. Microsoft's configurable outbound workload visualisation lets managers create custom workload charts and filters that group work by selected table and field, and it can show open lines or open header counts. Its saved views belong to individual user accounts. It is a workload view, not the case queue described here. A supervisor still needs the relevant work line and physical position before deciding what to change.
Close against the source record
At each review, confirm that the case still exists, record the next action and escalate work at risk of missing its commitment. After a correction, check the source order, work or parcel record before closing the row. Reopen the case if the obligation remains unresolved.
Review false alerts, missed cases, duplicates and stale data after use. Change a detection rule using an example record and a clear expected result. A useful dashboard helps staff identify and resolve unfinished work; an empty tile alone proves little.
