Verifying an order before printing a shipping label

Verify the physical contents against the released order before purchasing a label.

Verify the physical contents against the released order before buying a label. A correct address cannot fix a wrong size or missing item inside the carton.

Check the item, not just the order number

Before fulfilment begins, confirm the payment status, address details, SKU, inventory and customer contact information are complete. If any check is incomplete, stop before buying the label.

Scan or read each SKU and variant, quantity and any required accessory. Use a different check for lookalike items or products with multiple barcodes.

Shippit supports scan-to-verify alongside scan-to-print: the label can print once the order is verified. Keep verification and printing as distinct steps, with verification first.

For a multi-item order, keep the carton open until every required line is accounted for. If an item is unavailable, place the order on a visible hold and follow the agreed substitution or customer-contact rule; do not mark a line verified because a picker said it was present.

Check for wrong SKUs, missing accessories and wrong quantities. Do not treat the order as verified until each line matches the order.

Before relying on scanning, trial a duplicate scan, wrong variant and partial pack. Record whether the system blocks a label, warns the packer or logs the event, then train the correction path.

Pre-Label Verification Checklist

  • Confirm payment status and address details
  • Verify SKU, variant, quantity and required accessories
  • Scan each item to prevent lookalike or barcode errors
  • Keep carton open until all items are accounted for
  • Do not mark an item as verified if unavailable
  • Test exception pathswrong scan, partial pack, invalid address

Verified Order Fulfilment Workflow

  1. Review order details (payment, address, SKUs)
  2. Scan each item against the order line
  3. Verify physical contents match the order
  4. Confirm no exceptions (missing items, wrong variants)
  5. Only then proceed to print shipping label

Test the exception path

Check that the origin and destination addresses are correct and meet the carrier’s address-formatting requirements. In Shopify, an invalid shipping address can prevent label purchase; a selected service can also be unavailable between the origin and destination.

If a service is unavailable, try another carrier or contact a carrier directly. In eBay’s label flow, confirm the addresses, mailing date and preferred service, then select any applicable Package details options.

For irregular packaging such as tubes, eBay’s label flow provides an Irregular package option. If shipping hazardous materials, select the Hazardous materials option and specify the type.

Before buying the label, confirm the service and destination, then match the verified contents to the parcel and order ID. This gives the team a record to investigate a later claim without relying on memory.
