Choosing fulfilment software for an actual order profile
Build a representative order set, compare relevant software starting points and record what each demonstration proves or leaves unresolved.
Choose fulfilment software using orders that represent your work. A feature list cannot show whether a proposed setup handles your mixed baskets, location rules, warehouse checks and carrier accounts together. Identify the missing capability first, then compare products that address it.
Describe the order profile
Summarise a normal week without relying on the average order alone. Record sales channels, orders by fulfilment location, lines per order, common SKU combinations, peak periods, parcel sizes, delivery promises and orders needing a hold, split or manual correction. Include existing systems and the identifiers they exchange. Mark unavailable measures as unknown and sample real orders rather than inventing figures.
Choose a small demonstration set: a common order, a multi-line order, an unavailable item, an address change before release and a parcel needing a different delivery service. Add batch, serial, fragile or international cases only if they occur in your operation. State the expected outcome and exception owner for each case.
Investigate relevant starting points
These products address different parts of fulfilment. They are examples to investigate, not ranked substitutes.
Shopify location routing may be a starting point for a Shopify store assigning online orders among fulfilment locations. Shopify documents configurable routing and inventory by location.
Routing requires at least two active locations, and the permitted number of locations depends on the subscription plan. Check what the configured rules do when no single location can supply the order. Location routing alone does not establish detailed warehouse work control.
Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management Warehouse management addresses work inside a warehouse, including receiving, locations, picking, counting and packing. Microsoft documents mobile warehouse work, but also requires setup of components such as work templates and location directives. Ask for your receiving-to-pick path and shortage response to be shown in the proposed configuration. A documented feature does not prove a ready-made process for your site.
ShipStation may address a gap in label work or parcel verification. A ShipStation Help article is titled “Verify & Print Shipments with Barcode Scan”; ask the supplier to demonstrate the verification workflow your operation needs.
The Australian pricing page lists Auto-Routing as a Premium feature. Confirm what it does and whether it suits your requirements.
The Australian pricing page lists bringing your existing carrier account under Standard, and Premium includes Standard features. Check which carriers and services the proposed account can use, and obtain current account and fee terms in writing.
Fulfilment Software Features for Australian Operations
- Shopify Location RoutingConfigurable order routing across multiple locations; requires at least 2 active locations. Limited to inventory allocation and basic routing rules. Does not handle detailed warehouse workflows.
- Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management (Warehouse)Full warehouse control: receiving, picking, packing, counting. Requires setup of work templates and location directives. Supports mobile warehouse operations.
- ShipStation (Australia)Automated label generation, barcode verification, carrier integrations (Australia & NZ). Auto-Routing is Premium feature. Existing carrier accounts supported under Standard and Premium plans.
Record the decision
Use the same order set for each product that addresses the identified gap. Record the outcome shown, manual steps, missing data, failed-case recovery, integration owner, configuration work and commercial dependencies. Mark cases the supplier cannot show as unverified.
Decide against the complete order path. A faster label step has limited value if incorrect items still reach packing. Detailed warehouse controls may add little when allocation is the main problem. Choose the workflow that demonstrably closes the priority gap and leaves each hand-off with an owner.
